Commissioned, developed and produced through the HERE Artist Residency Program (HARP). Funding for A Marriage: 1 (Suburbia) is provided through the MAP Fund, a program of Creative Capital, supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Additional support provided by mediaThe foundation, inc.
A Marriage: 1 (Suburbia) played from April 23-May 4 building-wide.
- “Through all of this activity, Mr. Vaughan and Mr. Margolin keep up their intense, inward-focused task in the center of the upstairs theater ... They are, for better or worse, moving forward.”
- — Claudia La Rocco, The New York Times
- “Vaughan and Margolin's A Marriage: 1 (Suburbia) is a stellar example multimedia visual art through and through. Each piece has a subtle connection to another, all speaking to the presiding theme of same-sex marriage and its slow merger under the umbrella of the Normal American Couple.”
- — Jennifer Thompson, Eye on the Arts
About the show
Step into a double self-portrait steeped with the iconography of the American Dream in Nick Vaughan and Jake Margolin’s panorama of visual and performative art, A Marriage: 1 (Suburbia). The husbands commandeer HERE’s physical space with a blend of performance art, video, sculpture, drawing, and sound, to create immersive installations, with visual art on display during gallery hours, and performance actions occurring nightly. Navigating through the gallery space, both theatres, dressing rooms, restrooms and lobby, it’s your experience to curate; each moment you choose to explore works in tandem with the next to reveal the artists’ experiences of their same-sex marriage and express their deep ambivalence towards their new standing as a Normal American Couple.
