Dances for Solidarity: Dancing Through Darkness

AUG 23-25

Dances for Solidarity is a project that co-choreographs dances with people in solitary confinement who are incarcerated in prisons throughout the United States. The project began as a letter writing campaign between artists and activists in New York and incarcerated people in Texas and Louisiana. Each letter initiated with the same 10-step Dance for Solidarity as a means to initiate a conversation around movement. Through this correspondence, DFS has developed strong relationships with some incarcerated people who have become regular artistic collaborators to this project. Dushaan Gillum, who is incarcerated in Texas, has emerged as lead choreographer for the project, creating dances in his cell and transcribing them into handwritten letters.

Dancing Through Darkness features choreography created by Dushaan, who published a book of movement scores by the same name that will be available for purchase at each performance.
