Interlude
Interlude is a two-person exhibition of works by Michelle Girardello and Dulce Lamarca. An interlude is an in-between moment that implies a second act, a next step, a new beginning. Through video, photography, performance, and sculpture, Girardello and Lamarca capture the essence of intimate moments during transitions. This exhibition invites viewers to delve into the transformative power of transition and discover the beauty inherent in fleeting experiences.
Michelle Girardello’s work queers domestic spaces and envisions a fresh future that aligns with her desires. Through photography, Girardello skillfully crafts her “second act,” imbuing it with playfulness and imagination that were once absent in her life. Her series titled “Emotional Furniture” presents evocative tableaus of domestic spaces, where chairs cease to be mere objects and instead assume human qualities—expressing despondency, arousal, or comfort. Drawing inspiration from her childhood fantasies of a happy and healthy home life beyond the confines of trauma, Girardello forges her own understanding of what home means and transcends preconceived beliefs. By infusing her sculptures with emotions and a sense of agency, Girardello invites viewers to reflect on their own relationships and the profound impact of emotional connections.
Dulce Lamarca, through her videos, offers intimate glimpses into transitional moments. In her captivating series “Un Entre,” meaning “a between,” Lamarca tunes her cello in transitory spaces, preparing for a performance that never comes to fruition. Fully embracing the state of in-betweenness, Lamarca highlights its perpetual nature. We are constantly moving from one moment to another, transitioning from one life stage to the next. Through her performances, Lamarca emphasizes this inherent fluidity of human existence. For instance, in her video “Grace,” we hear Lamarca humming “Amazing Grace” as she strolls in front of the bustling Grace building on 57th street. The chaotic cityscape stands in stark contrast to the soothing sound of her hum and the hopeful tone of the song, creating an emotional juxtaposition.
Together, Lamarca and Girardello redefine the ordinary, offering fresh perspectives on often-overlooked moments. Their shared affinity for the camera serves as their primary tool for pausing time and capturing the world as they envision it. Through their use of humor and improvisation, these artists not only heal themselves but also grant their audience an opportunity to embrace the interludes of life.
