The APEX Festival: a god’s house & The Unforgivables
a god’s house is a devised solo performance exploring the limitations of memory and storytelling in intergenerational histories. Using object-theater, scenography, and movement-centered practices, the project interrogates a relationship with Puerto Rican ancestry and place through the desire to desperately document what cannot physically exist anymore. The performance is an experiment on the fortitude of memory and ancestral love. “a god’s house” is made possible through Sofía Anastasia (dramaturg), Raychel Ceciro (movement coordinator), Antonio De La Vega (co-director), Noah Crandell (co-director/consulting), Mobéy Lola Irizarry (musician), Moira Zhang (scenography), and Zakaria Khafagy (documentation). All participated and supported in an involved devising process that continues to grow and blossom in every iteration of the piece. Written, directed and performed by Irisdelia Garcia.
The Unforgivables is about desperation metamorphosing into devastation while being cemented on a land called America where dreamers from foreign lands are refused to be given permanent entry.
APEX Festival is a collective, artistic activation of the HERE Arts Center by graduating MFA Contemporary Theatre and Performance students. Ten distinct projects presented over three weeks serve as each student’s capstone offering as well as a public introduction to their work as it exists at this stage in their development. In celebration, the School of Drama invites The New School community, communities surrounding The New School, and communities beyond to experience a collection of performative artworks that push the boundaries of discipline and form.
