The Passion According to Janair

November 5-23, 2025

The Passion According to Janair is a solo performance co-written by Brazilian actress and playwright Ana Carbatti and Group Dot BR Artistic Director Andressa Furletti, and directed by Furletti. Inspired by Clarice Lispector’s The Passion According to G.H. and Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, the work follows Janair, a Black domestic worker in Rio de Janeiro, as she confronts racial, gender, and class-based oppression. In a society that renders her invisible, Janair breaks through the walls of silence and marginalization to reclaim her voice, power, and identity.

The play is a deep exploration of societal invisibility, systemic injustice, and personal empowerment, weaving literary influences with contemporary experiences of race and labor. Thematically, it connects urgent global conversations on race, class, and gender, making visible a story often left untold.

Group Dot BR is NY’s only Brazilian theater company. For the past 13 years, the company has been presenting Brazilian Culture through the performing arts in NY. A 501(c)(3) organization led by immigrant women.
